History
Since its inception, the Historical Society has been collecting and preserving the significant history of Chautauqua County. The History House building is used as a museum for the society, with all the artifacts within owned & maintained by the historical society. It is open to the public.
The CQ County Historical & Genealogical Society was formed in April of 1999. An enthusiastic group met in the court room of the courthouse in Sedan, KS. The first officers elected were: President Vera; Vice President Del; Secretary Carlotta; and Treasurer Cheryl. The regular meeting date was set up for the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the First National Bank meeting room.
In May of 2000, the Society set up the first Library at 604 W Main St. Donations of historical value soon started filling up the shelves. With all the valuable items, the Society soon outgrew the building. Then in September of 2003, the library contents were moved to 115 W Main St. Many of the members have made donations for equipment to be used by the many visitors to the library.
In 2010 it was decided to host an event to share history with the area and so the Heritage Festival was born. It is a day of music, homemade food items, antique collection displays and folks in pioneer costume teaching younger generations history lessons and passing on skills of the past still significant even in this modern day. The last festival was held in 2017. The Society currently has 52 charter members; of these 8 have been members through every year with the organization. We owe a great deal of appreciation to these founders of the society.
